New Orleans Uptown Brass

New Orleans Uptown Brass is a new brass quintet based in New Orleans Louisiana. Its members are all full-time musicians from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and graduates from leading American music conservatories.

Recently nominated for the 2008 Classical Arts Awards, the New Orleans Uptown Brass can present a large and diverse repertoire of music. Their thorough grounding in classical performance combined with the influence of the jazz tradition of New Orleans which means they can change gears effortlessly from the ornate baroque masterpieces of J.S. Bach to the hot style of Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong.

New Orleans Uptown Brass plans to perform as many full recitals as possible outside of their busy schedule with the Philharmonic. They want to help build audiences at local performance venues and provide a high quality and entertaining musical experience. The Quintet can excite audiences by offering a fresh presentation to concert goers, our goal is not to be your normal classical chamber group where everyone is sitting in a semicircle, wearing tuxedos and staring into music stands playing music that can sometimes seem inaccessible.

Our eclectic mix of styles including transcriptions of French impressionistic music, Dixieland and high baroque, have broad appeal and all are played with great élan. Our audience response is one of extreme enthusiasm; “Wow, I didn’t know brass instruments could do all that” is something we hear often after our performances.

New Orleans Uptown Brass wants to play it’s part in contributing to music education and supporting those people who teach music everyday in the schools. We have developed a knockout concert to present to local elementary schools. The concept is “A First Look at the Brass”. We have specifically fashioned an educational program that provides an up close introduction to the brass family of instruments. See each instrument demonstrated and highlighted through renditions of popular melodies from Mozart to the music of a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans.

We can all remember the moment when a music teacher first sparked our interest in the instruments. Realizing the impact of that event and understanding the importance of music education, we want to help make that moment happen for as many young people as possible. We keep thinking how different our lives would be if that teacher hadn’t taking the time to show us what they do.

Our education concerts can be modified depending on audience age and musical experience. We can supercharge the tunes for more advanced students and show them what is possible with determination and practice.

The New Orleans Uptown Brass is dedicated artists who seek to successfully step outside of the classical norms to communicate and entertain. Please click on the icon BIOGRAPHIES at the top right corner or this page for complete biographical information about the musicians
